Learn More About Intro to Computer Science Education K-8
Get into the basics of computer science education with this introductory course.
This course gives educators and leaders a strong foundation in the updated CS SOLs and what high-quality computer science looks like across K–8. Participants explore the six VDOE CS strands, examine practical models for CS integration, and reflect on their school or division’s readiness for CS. By the end, they’ll have a concrete plan and resources to support meaningful, inclusive computer science learning for all students.
Objectives:
- Participants will define “computer science” and explain how educators should teach CS in classrooms.
- Participants will define and explain CS pedagogical strategies (e.g., unplugged to plugged, PRIMM, pair programming, code review).
- Participants will connect each of the six strands of the VDOE computer science standards of learning to topics already taught in their schools.
- Participants will identify and compare CS integration models (e.g., teaching CS concepts in core content classes, stand-alone CS course, elective or “specials” class, coaching model), describing the pros and cons of each.
- Participants will develop strategies for observing and coaching staff on CS teaching and learning.
- Participants will identify areas for further learning in CS education and draft a plan for implementing appropriate professional development in their schools and divisions.
- None

CodeVA professional learning opportunities are available to Virginia and DC public school educators, pre-service teachers, and Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) educators, thanks in part to our partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). While VDOE continues to subsidize a limited number of courses, most offerings now include a tuition fee.
Educators outside of these groups are welcome to explore our tuition-based options, but this course is only available for Virginia educators at this time. Check back soon to see when it will be offered nation-wide!
